The Farmers' Market in Glasgow starts at 10 am and I've always appreciated that honesty. The city seems unwilling to pretend that food is more of a priority than slowly easing into a hangover. There is little dignity in scrounging for food at a market too soon after a long night in the pub. Better to get some sleep instead and have a leisurely walk in the middle of the day. But this relaxed attitude doesn't reflect the products for sale.
Especially the meat. Lovely, varied, fresh and quite reasonable. It all has to be vacuum sealed I assumer for health reasons, but that really shouldn't be a deterrent. I've never regretted any beast bit I've purchased here.
There's also some incredible seafood not long from the ocean.
There's a bounty of Scottish homebaking and towers of effortless and impeccable jams and jellies. This lady was turning tiny Scottish pancakes on a griddle to order.
And although the vegetables are lovingly grown and of wonderful provenance, they just don't thrill me, not in July, anyway.
I'll just dream of thinly scalloped veal instead.
It's so nice to have you do all of the research for us. It makes our decision making so much easier!! Thanks.
